Cape Coral Community Foundation to host annual golf classic

The Cape Coral Community Foundation will host its annual Cape Golf Classic on May 2 at the Palmetto Pines Country Club. The event is the foundation’s signature fund-raiser and helps with operating costs throughout the year.

The foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in the greater Cape Coral community through the stewardship of permanently endowed and gifted funds, as well as through some fund-raisers such as the golf classic. The endowments and gifts are used to support community grants and scholarships, and to help community groups such as Habitat for Humanity and the Cape Caring Center.

“This is our signature event and we are thrilled as we are almost at capacity,” said Beth Sanger, executive director for the Cape Coral Community Foundation, of the number of teams entering the event. “With the way the economy has been, we are so excited that people wanted to be a part of the event and help support the foundation.”

Sanger said the golf classic has been very much a tradition in the Cape for more than 10 years, and as with past golf classics, there has always been a honoree celebrated for his or her efforts in the community.

“This year we are honoring Rich Barton,” said Sanger. “He has been extremely supportive to the foundation. He has served on our board, as a corporate member, participated in past golf classics and been a strong financial supporter.”

Palmetto Pines will open at 10 a.m. for golfers to register early or participate in putting contests. A shotgun start will take place at 12:30 p.m. with teams participate in a four-player scramble. Golfers may also take part in a hole-in-one contest.

“Riverside Bank is again this year donating the food and drinks that we will serve after the game,” said Michelle Adamson, administrative coordinator for the Cape Coral Community Foundation. “We are not sure what they are serving, but in the past they have had items like Italian sausage with peppers. Whatever it is it is always very good.”

An awards presentation dinner and ceremony will be held after the tournament, with awards being given out for first, second, third and forth, and for the hole-in-one contest.

“Guests may also purchase raffle tickets where they have a chance to win wine baskets, golf packages, restaurant gift cards and massages,” said Adamson. “We will also have a two-square board contest with a chance to win a week’s trip to the Keys or a four-day, three-night stay at a Cape Harbour condo.”

There is still availability to play in the golf classic, but Adamson said individuals must act quickly if they wish to participate as spots are filling up. Friday is the last day to sign up and registration forms can be downloaded from: www.capecoralcf.planyourlegacy.org. For more information, contact the foundation at 542-5594.
